How Crosswind Works
The Math
Angle = Wind Direction − Runway
Crosswind = Wind Speed × sin(Angle)
Headwind = Wind Speed × cos(Angle)
Crosswind = Wind Speed × sin(Angle)
Headwind = Wind Speed × cos(Angle)
This is basic trigonometry that resolves wind into two components: parallel to runway and perpendicular.
Practical Tips
- ✈️ 0° = Pure headwind (best)
- ✈️ 30–45° = Manageable crosswind
- ✈️ 60°+ = High crosswind, consider alternate
- ✈️ 90° = Pure crosswind
- ✈️ 120°+ = Tailwind (avoid!)
Regulations
- 🟢 Recommended: <10 kt crosswind
- 🟡 Acceptable: 10–15 kt crosswind
- 🔴 Maximum: Varies by aircraft (check POH)
- ❌ Never: Exceed demonstrated limits
