How Crosswind Works

The Math
Angle = Wind Direction − Runway
Crosswind = Wind Speed × sin(Angle)
Headwind = Wind Speed × cos(Angle)

This is basic trigonometry that resolves wind into two components: parallel to runway and perpendicular.

Practical Tips
  • ✈️ = Pure headwind (best)
  • ✈️ 30–45° = Manageable crosswind
  • ✈️ 60°+ = High crosswind, consider alternate
  • ✈️ 90° = Pure crosswind
  • ✈️ 120°+ = Tailwind (avoid!)
Regulations
  • 🟢 Recommended: <10 kt crosswind
  • 🟡 Acceptable: 10–15 kt crosswind
  • 🔴 Maximum: Varies by aircraft (check POH)
  • Never: Exceed demonstrated limits
